Laboratory for testing insulating oils and paper
History
For more than 50 years, the laboratory for testing insulating oil and paper has been continually testing oil for a wide number of users and working on improving and developing new test techniques, as is the Institute's history. The laboratory was one of the first in Europe and the world to use gas chromatography to evaluate the working condition of transformers, and it continues to be a pioneer in new areas and test techniques via participation with international standards and research agencies (IEC TC 10 and CIGRE SC A2 and D1). On the basis of a large number of test results for insulating oils and paper, a substantial number of studies-projects for local and foreign consumers have been developed. There are 25 authorized test techniques currently available at the lab.
Primary activity
Testing of insulating oils and paper
- Type testing of new oils
- Tests of oil from exploitation: gas chromatographic analysis of free and dissolved gases in oil (energy, measuring transformers and voltage regulators),
- physical-chemical and electrical characteristics of the oil
- Examination of corrosive sulfur compounds in oil, copper and silver corrosion tests,
- Test method for the quantitative examination of Dibenzyl Disulfide (DBDS) in new and used oils,
- Determination of elemental sulfur content in oil,
- Determination of the content of furan compounds dissolved in oil,
- Determination of methanol and ethanol content in oil
- Qualitative and quantitative examination of the presence of pyralene content (PCB) in mineral transformer oil
- Determining the degree of polymerization of paper (DP)
- Measurement of water content in paper
- Specific additives in mineral and vegetable oils
- Specific additives in thermally stabilized insulating papers
New application tests
- regenerative ability of oil (laboratory simulation of oil regeneration for process optimization in the field)
- Oil mixing (laboratory tests of mixing new and used oils)
- artificial aging tests of oil and paper.
